I just thought that this looks unusual and I quite like it.

Re: Interesting green 'National Band' Portable
Looks nice. The Columbia style motor and chassis is good, and the soundbox and tonearm look as good exponential style, etc. I'm sure it's a pretty good machine.

You quite like it? So do I! I've never been a fan of National Band machine, simply because they usually have a weird- shaped arm, and had nothing particular to recommend them, but this one is a definite "watcher". Love that mother-of-pearl motor board!poodling around wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 2:39 pm I just thought that this looks unusual and I quite like it.

It does look nice. Something really unique about this gramophone.Inigo wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 3:01 pm Looks nice. The Columbia style motor and chassis is good, and the soundbox and tonearm look as good exponential style, etc. I'm sure it's a pretty good machine.
Interesting assessment you have made too.

I agree with you entirely. I was surprised that it is a National Band gramophone too.Phono48 wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 3:19 pmYou quite like it? So do I! I didn't know what the board is made of. Mother of pearl sounds great !!!
This would look great in anyones collection I think. A real 'show-stopper' !!!
I can't quite read what it says on the bottom left part of the logo. Does it say 'Manufactured by .................' something ???

The manufacturers were Thompson, Diamond and Butcher, so I presume that's what is written there?poodling around wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 3:40 pm

Re: Interesting green 'National Band' Portable
The presence of the nickelled motor plate and the autobrake attached to it suggests that National Band were moving upmarket.
An identical motor plate was fitted to the better Alba portables such as the "555" which I once owned.

Looking again under magnification, the curved banner says "The National Band Gramophone ....?" Can't read the last word, but I presume it is "Company".Phono48 wrote: Sat Jul 01, 2023 4:52 am

Re: Interesting green 'National Band' Portable
It is! I have the same machine in my collection, only red with a cream colour "Mother Of Pearl" motorboard. It feels very plastic-like so I'm not sure what the material is. It is a very generic portable design. There were many different names of makers who effectively produced an identical machine, with only the brand names being different. I think the Mother Of Pearl effect motorboard is uniquely National Band though.Phono48 wrote: Sat Jul 01, 2023 9:47 amLooking again under magnification, the curved banner says "The National Band Gramophone ....?" Re: Interesting green 'National Band' Portable
Sold for a total of £ 73.69 - including postage.
An absolute bargain !
There won't be many more of these trundling along in the future me-thinks ......... and it looks so wonderful !
I reckon if some-one displayed their portables in a row, this would be pretty much the one most people would stop for and admire the most.
