Brunswick 3 spring motor spring orientation.

Post by Ben the phono man »

Hello all,
I've been working on a brunswick 225 the past few days. It needed some fresh grease in the spring barrels. I made sure to take note on which way the springs are put in, but something just doesn't make sense, I have a parts motor of the exact type in one of my bins, and upon disassembling that, the springs are in the same order. The order is as follows. the spring closest to the drive gear goes in clockwise, while the other two are put in counter clockwise. these two end springs face each other, so they wouldn't wind the same way? Its very confusing. I always seem like I have to make completely sure, even though I took notes upon disassembly and with another parts motor! If anyone has any insight, or a diagram on how brunswick three spring motors go together, please let me know. I have included a picture of the exact motor (not mine) below.

Thanks everyone!

I don't know Brunswick motors, but I'm any case, if you follow the rotation direction from the winding crank to the gears through the springs you'll eventually find the logics of it all.
A double spring barrel usually has the two springs in opposite directions inside, one spring is loaded by the arbour, the other by the barrel, both springs in series. The third spring in another single barrel may be tensioned by the outer engagement of the barrels, or by the arbour and its sleeves, etc. Examine it slowly and you'll find the answer, it's not that difficult. I wish you luck! :clover:

I believe you've got it right. What's throwing you off is that the 2 springs mounted face-to-face are both CCW, when you're viewing them each from the open end of the barrel! When the 2 spring barrels are mated together, face-to-face, the end result is one spring CCW while the second is CW, when viewed through the backside of the barrel. (use your x-ray vision here  ) It's a "my left, your right conundrum."

Thanks for the help everyone,

I put it together in that orientation, and the middle spring broke at the pear arbor, which made the other two springs disconnect. I think this may be a problem with brunswick springs. I put them in in the exact way described. Good luck I have a parts motor with two (seemingly good) springs, the final spring in the parts motor had the exact same break as the one I tried to put in. If anyone has a brunswick three spring motor and is willing to take it apart and send some pics, that would be helpful. I'm still having quite a bit of trouble understanding how these springs wind even though they are not all at the same orientation.

Thanks again,
- Ben
