Awesome videos Shawn! I especially laughed out loud with the “boos” sound effect at the point where you mentioned the surplus machines were surrendered to AGC! 😁

Shawn,

Thanks for another awesome video. The Echophone is one of my favorites. It seems that Amet got screwed by the courts.

I have a couple documents that may add a small piece to the puzzle. There is a letter to a Mr Edward Peacock from Columbia dated April 12, 1899 offering Echophones in lots of 12 at $2.50 per machine. A second letter to the same Mr. Edward Peacock from the Strong Talking Machine Company dated May 23,1899 offering to sell him Echophones in lots of 100 at $1.50 per machine.

I suspect that Edward Peacock (or someone like him) bought machines in bulk from Columbia or Strong Talking Machine company for cheap and modified them with a more traditional reproducer and horn for resale at a profit as a cottage business.

I wonder if Strong Talking Machine Company bought out the stock of confiscated Echophones from Columbia in April/May 1899. It must have been quite a stock of confiscated machines between the ones bought in bulk by Leslie’s Magazine to give as subscription premiums and ones being offered in lots of 100 by Strong. You would think there would be more around today. I wonder if possibly Edward Peacock worked for Leslie Magazine and was purchasing on their behalf.

Mike
