Those vv-80 legs look spindly but, Casters?

Post by PeteLeoni »

It needs them for a bit more height imo. Did the shorter VV-80s ever come with castors? Kinda afraid I will split the legs eventually with the socket hole. Mine had the slider caps, but I want casters because the earlier 1921 runs of VV-80 are only about 40" high. They made them larger/taller in later runs.

Oh well, I guess I will j
take the chance and drill the holes starting with a small bit. 3/8th" hole called for these 1
Seems like a pretty good percentage of total leg. They probably used better wood in 1923. They sure made better people (-:

The die is cast. It survived. I had wanted the "cup" type but could couldn't find suitable. I antiqued those which I found these very decent quality with sockets in a local hardware store for $6.97! Probably sat there since the 80s.

Victor pretty much phased out casters when the VV-80 ( http://victor-victrola.com/80.htm ) was introduced. The ones you installed don't look too bad, though you'll probably have to take care when moving it around, since, as you note, the legs are spindly.

Yeah, thanks. I figure I won't be pushing it over any "humps and bumps" without levering it or lifting. It may be somewhat smaller but still heavy. It is totally remarkable that these things have relatively little value. I think the workmanship, tech and quality is truly mind boggling. What a wonderful people we were.

Casters working fine over pile carpet. They are small though. Anything else would take too big a chunk out of that little "legette"

Another idea. I will wrap the very bottom of the legs with carpet thread much like an arrow head is fastened to the shaft, then coat it with superglue. I doubt it will even be visible at all but I imagine it will be nearly unbreakable. Just a thought for anyone who has done this.

I don't believe that would look attractive.
