Expert ‘Mahogany Gramophone’

Post by jamiegramo »

The auctioneer appears not to know what they are selling.

Any further information appreciated.

No, it's an Expert Senior. And probably an "All-Range Horn Model" too. Simply magnificent. It has the 4-spring soundbox too. The last example made £12,000 but this one is MUCH better!

It's a small point but they have even managed to put a pull down flap to the front of cabinet, behind which will be limited record storage (I presume). Why they didn't utilise this obvious space on the floor-standers originally is completely beyond me.

I like this one too!

Does this picture help identify the soundbox a bit clearer?

As I said previously it is the "Dynamic" 4-spring correct Expert soundbox

Thanks Steve! I missed your post before I posted mine. Can you give an approximate date?

Not without more precise details and access to the machine but the model itself predates the EMG Mark 10A and 10B models (the latter by at least 3 years). That's 1930 onwards. I'd guess this is a mid-30's example, just by the cabinet but it's just a guess. If it has a 36" diameter horn, it is the "All-Range" and incredibly rare, and arguably the most desirable EMG or Expert machine ever. Please note this is an EXPERT machine and not an EMG as in the thread title. They are completely different although E.M.Ginn
started both companies. Expert machines were the natural progression from EMG and the original "giant horn" papier-mache horn gramophones. The EMG models 10A / 10B came after them as Davey (who took control of EMG) chased Ellis Michael Ginn (Expert and the founder of EMG) in his developments after Ginn lost his original company and started over.

I'd recommend EVERYONE interested in these machines to read Frank James' excellent book "The EMG Story". It is a fabulously well documented and told story. It clears up any confusion over EMG v Expert too! ;)

It does seem to have been publicised rather late ? The auction is only in 2 days time.

Maybe it will sell cheaply because of the short notice and maybe where it is located ?

Perhaps selling for £ 2 would be a little bit of wishful thinking but on the other hand ................. who knows :o

Location? I doubt it!
Timing? Possibly. Another prime example of auctioneer incompetence.
