Needle Adapter?

This came with a box full of phonograph needles. Is this some sort of needle adapter or modifier? There is a round hole to insert a needle.

Very interesting, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Luther Haile held a number of related patents.

Here is the patent for the this needle adapter with a full description, the needle was held in not by a set screw but by friction with a rubber insert..
