Do you have a Zono Type D with a celluloid tag???

Post by Zwebie »

I recently picked up this early Zonophone add that shows a Model D with a tag!
The drawing shows a "very early" D with a flat bedplate, a crank hole that goes thru the case, and a tone arm as in later machines.

I have owned several Zono Type D's thru the years, and have seen many more, but, I have never seen a Zonophone Type D with a celluloid tag!
Most of the early cased Zono C's also did not have a celluloid tag, but a few did.

So my question is: Do you have or have you seen a Zonophone Type D with a celluloid tag???
Please post pictures if you have one.

Cheers, Bob S.

I too have never seen a Type D with a tag. I've never seen that particular ad either - thanks for posting it, Bob!

It's interesting that the Zonophone catalogs had the Type D priced at $12.00 rather than the $15.00 claimed by this ad. And check out the angle of the sound box!

George, George, George,

Look what I found on page 106 of "The Talking Machine Compendium"!

So this is the first one I have ever seen. It has a thru the case crank and a second style bedplate.
So, it looks like the earliest cased Zono D's did indeed have a tag!

Seems like all the Zono D's I have seen have the fourth style bedplate with the crank hump outside the case and no tag.

Learn something new everyday!

Good grief - now THIS is embarrassing. My memory's finally beginning to fail me... And to think that book came out only 27 years ago!

But note that the Type D shown in the Compendium does not have the earliest motor plate/support arm location. If all the earliest Ds carried a tag into the 2nd type motor plate, it seems as though we'd see more of them.

Thanks again for posting this, Bob.
