Hello all,
I’ve been tasked with a sort of theocratic mission and any finds will be displayed in a museum for many who visit to appreciate.
The curator of this museum has asked me to find Victor “Stabat Mater” records.
There are many available on certain sites but I’m looking for the “earliest examples”.
I have one early Victor “Inflammatus” movement in Latin by Helene Noldi which I believe to be from about 1907-1908.
Are there any earlier copies out there anyone would like to sell? Again, this would be sitting in a cared for museum setting with a life of appreciation if found.
Looking for any movement at this time. Thank you all!!

Re: WANTED: Early Victor Stabat Mater
Have you considered Victor 88460 Stabat Mater : Cujus Animam / Caruso r.1913.
I don't know why the curator has specified early Victor recordings when there are others including :
Edison DD 80221 Stabat Mater : Inflammatus / Marie Rappold.

Why the curator requests early “Victor” I am unsure. Maybe they already have other versions or formats. So far, this is the earliest I can locate…Helene Noldi 1907ish.
I did read somewhere..now for the life of me I can’t remember where…that there was one Victor record made with only 130 copies produced…maybe that is inaccurate.

Re: WANTED: Early Victor Stabat Mater
Do you want only Rossini ones? Other composers--including Pergolesi, Vivaldi, and even Schubert--wrote Stabat Mater pieces, although the Rossini is far and away the most commonly recorded, at least in my experience, and probably many or most of the others didn't grace Victor's catalogue in the acoustic era.
I'm not looking to dispose of any of these, but for reference, here, copied from my computer catalogue, are the acoustic Victor records I have of excerpts from Rossini's Stabat Mater. "Vica" is the Victrola batwngs label, "VicaR" is the Victrola Record (patents) label, and Vic is the Victor batwings label. Red Seal unless otherwise specified.
Rossini: Stabat Mater -- Cujus Animam (Through His Bleeding Side). In Latin. Evan Williams; or. Vica 6324-A, 12"
Rossini: Stabat Mater -- Cujus Animam (Through His Wounded Side). In Latin. Caruso; or. Vica 88460, 12"
Rossini: Stabat Mater -- Fac ut portem (Oh, Endow Me). In Latin. Homer; or. Vica 6167-B, 12"
Rossini: Stabat Mater -- Inflammatus (To Thy Holy Care). In Latin. Gadski/or. Vic 88059, 12"
Rossini: Stabat Mater -- Inflammatus. Marsh; Vic Cho, Or. VicR 70037, 12" (prpl. lbl.)
Rossini: Stabat Mater -- Pro Peccatis (For His People Unrelenting). In Latin. Mardones/or. Vica 6420-B, 12"
Rossini: Stabat Mater -- Pro Peccatis. In Latin. Plancon. (a) (For His People) w/ pno. Vic 81033, 10" (b) (Through the darkness) w/ or. HMVPS A.G.S.B.74, 12" (mauve lbl.; "private subscription only"--don't know if there was a Victor equivalent)
Rossini: Stabat Mater -- Quis est homo (Who Shall Blameless Stand Before Thee?) In Latin. Louise Homer. (1) w/ Louise Homer Stires/or. Vica 8031-A, 12" (2) w/ Alma Gluck; or. VicaR 88380, 12"

Re: WANTED: Early Victor Stabat Mater
drh,
Thank you for sharing and taking the time to share your examples in the subject of Stabat Mater on Victor.
The more and more I research and communicate with others on this subject the more I know I need to get more information from this curator.
Not having any experience in this genre or may I even say “ancient religious classical” I’m starting to understand the wide range of composers that produced.
I can only assume it’s Rossini he is interested in. More information is needed from him
Thank you all for your help and hopefully I can post some updated details!

Re: WANTED: Early Victor Stabat Mater
Glad to be of service. According to the Discography of American Historical Recordings (DAHR), your Noldi was recorded 11/21/1907 in Philadelphia. https://adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/ ... nflammatus
Speaking of DAHR, you might find helpful a title search there for Stabat Mater. In my catalogue, I've noted dates it shows for some, but not all, the records in my earlier post. My copy of Gadski in Inflammatus is from 9/30/1910, but an earlier take was issued under the same number, recorded 3/17/1907, which would put it a few months earlier than your Noldi. Marsh came somewhat later, 3/27/1911--and, by the way, it's a spectacular account. Plancon's Pro Peccatis on Victor is from 1/29/1904; the HMV is dated 4/14/1908.
I hope all this helps. Good luck with your project!

Re: WANTED: Early Victor Stabat Mater
Thank you for the added information. I will certainly check that out. That may have been the source of information regarding the 130 copy release I noted earlier but will have to confirm. Thanks again!!drh wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 10:28 am Glad to be of service. Re: WANTED: Early Victor Stabat Mater
Here's a 12" I have from 1903. I could not find it in the Fagan and Moran Victor discography nor find any information about it online.
