“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”

June 1, 1873: Born: Ada Jones, leading female recording artist during the acoustic recording era.

June 1, 1897: Eldridge Johnson filed for a U.S. patent for “Sound Recording and Reproducing Machine.” This device would be marketed through 1901 as the Berliner/Johnson “Exhibition” sound box.

June 1, 1903: Abner Seeley filed for a U.S. patent on a “Record Box.” This would become the familiar container with indented bottoms and lids which housed Edison Gold-Moulded Records.

June 1, 1915: Eugene Kieffer was granted U.S. Design Patent No.47,399 for “Cabinet for Talking Machines.” This was the cabinet for the Victrola XVIII.
