“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”

June 19, 1900: Louis Valiquet was granted a U.S. patent (No.651,904) for “Gramophone Motor.” This was marketed from March/April 1900 as the Zonophone, the first successful competitor to Berliner and, for awhile, the only disc talking machine legally available in the U.S.
