“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”

July 7, 1887: Charles Sumner Tainter applied for a U.S. patent for “Apparatus for Recording and Reproducing Speech and Other Sounds.” This was the design that would become the treadle-driven Graphophones, and persist in the upper works of Columbia machines through the mid-1890s.

July 7, 1887: Born: Olive Kline, concert soprano and exclusive Victor artist.
