Two Edison reproducers: Bad Styli?

Post by AmberolaAndy »

Next on AmberolaAndy Asks Obvious Questions Because He Needs A Second Opinion…

I got these two different Edison reproducers, one’s a Diamond Disc while the other is a Model C.

I’ve not been happy with the performance of both reproducers and the Diamond Disc appears to make obvious groove damage when I play it.

So, is it time to get on Thephonographshop or EBay and ditch these old styli or what?

It’s been a real bee in my bonnet lately.

Hard to tell from the photos; but if the DD reproducer leaves marks on records (have you tried it on the 'dead wax' areas?), it will have to be replaced.

As for the C: has it been serviced, with new gaskets, etc.? If so, you might need to have the stylus turned. You might have to get a high power magnifier to see whether there are any flat spots.

That DD stylus looks very suspect to me... and leaving a mark screams "REPLACE NOW!"
I would send both off for overhaul and new styli. That way you know it is done right.

I’ll try the DD on the dead areas. The Model C here was on my suitcase standard. I have no idea if it’s been re-gasketed but I’ll just replace with another stylus when I get to rebuilding it. I have many other model Cs and I can’t remember which ones have been redone and haven’t.

Yeah that DD stylus is totally sus. But I also got a nickel plated DD reproducer that also needs a stylus and frankly since it’s being used in a B-19 Chalet (which is still missing the grill btw) I’d rather send that one out for a new stylus instead.(I also have a gold plated one with a good stylus on my C19 that I overhauled myself) Is Steve Medved still servicing them or do I send to Wyatt instead?
