Speed adjustment for a Fireside HELP!

Post by Edisonfan »

It is really frustrating trying to get the speed just right on my fireside? I noticed that the lever for staring the machine acts as a break and helps with controlling the speed? I know there is the speed control knob for the mandrel as well?

The speed control is below deck left side. Its a finger screw. See pic. There is no speed control on or near mandrel

That I figured out! I just watched a YouTube video by Dyslexic Genius Hurt and suggested making sure the flywheel for the governor was making contact with the felt of the yoke

If adjustment of the speed control knob does not permit appropriate mandrel rotation for a given cylinder being played then you may need to adjust the position of the governor weights / friction disc assembly to bring the governor friction disc in closer contact with the governor speed control yoke. This can be easily done by allowing any main spring tension to be completely released, then loosening the single set screw on the governor weight assembly collar that adjusts the position of the weight assembly on the shaft and then slide the governor weight assembly into a position that is closer to the governor speed control yoke. Tighten the collar set screw for the governor weight assembly and try it. You can also make tiny adjustments to the position of the governor shaft itself by loosening each of the set screws securing the governor shaft end bearings and sliding the entire governor assembly. As a very gentle note: there is no "flywheel" on the Edison Fireside model. There is a governor friction disc and I'm guessing this is what you were referring to in the previous comments. Good luck!

Thank you Doug! Friction wheel, okay. I didn’t know what is was called? Flywheel just popped into my head.

An online friend suggested oiling the felt.

Turns out all I need to do, is adjust the weights on the governor by using the set screw.
