This information is from page 5 of a 1916-1918 era Edison catalog titled "Mr. Edison's Sublime Gift To Man." I like their use of the term "cabinet architects."
   Superior Cabinets
People who know say that no instrument in its field approaches the New Edison in quality. They include in that statement the beauty and authenticity of Edison cabinet designs.
To illustrate the infinite care and patience with which Edison cabinets are selected, we refer to the tasteful William and Mary design pictured on this page. When it was decided to offer the Official Laboratory Model in walnut, to supplement the popular Chippendale cabinet, designs were solicited from the leading cabinet architects of the country.
Forty different sketches were received and after a careful checking up with furniture styles of the period of William and Mary, twenty-five sketches were rejected. Of the fifteen that remained, each one was a masterpiece. To finally decide which of the fifteen was best, a sample cabinet was made from each sketch. A jury of furniture experts inspected these cabinets and decided on the W250 model.
This same scrupulous care and attention to detail characterizes each Edison model from the Moderne to the elaborately hand-carved French Gothic replica.
