Post by mjbarnes »

What is the correct stylus size and best shape to play the big Pathé centre-start discs? Thanks.

If you mean on a modern turntable, I've had the best results I ever managed with an 8 mil Rek-o-kut stylus assembly from Esoteric Sound, which came as part of a kit with various other styli (elliptical) for Stanton 500 cartridges. Alas, Esoteric is showing the Pathé stylus as sold out, at least as a single item.

Even with that one, some Pathé records still refuse to track, instead skating furiously--for those, a Pathé spring machine is the best choice--but the number of such has been much, much lower, and the sonic results have been noticeably better, with the 8 mil than I ever had with other, smaller choices.
