Is this a bargain ?????

Post by poodling around »

This may be worth less or it may be worth a lot more than the asking price (£203.50) - I don't know.

But I would like to know from those who know .....................

Really?!!!

The fact that you were the first person to spot it but the second person bought it should probably give you some indication. ;)

A Baby Monarch or re-badged "Victor 1" / "New Victor" in G & T parlance - the last one at auction sold for £800 with a Celeste Trench portable with it. I have two different versions of this and the cheapest one cost me £650. It was a bargain basement item.

Oh my gosh that was cheap. I paid £700 for mine and the motor needed work. Amazingly indifferent seller who uses one word in the title and 2 poor photos that barely show the HMV banner transfer decal on the side. Even if re motored the horn and elbow were certainly worth the money. And all for just £5.88 delivery.

I would like to have got this one!

Yes, indeed. Somewhat incredulous, not only the very low asking price but the use of Buy It Now to guarantee the price ceiling on an antique which is very collectible. The same seller has a repro 1980's Nipper for £400 though. Beware, that one is not a bargain, "poodling" !!!!!

The nipper is certainly not a bargain. I was tempted by the box of 5000 gramophone needles for £34.65. Assuming it’s still full? But the needles look either tarnished or rusty.

I'd leave them well alone, personally. They're probably all used.

Poodling has an obvious but uncustomary skill at spotting "very interesting", but cheap, machines he doesn't personally want before anyone else does. By the time he asks about them here the items are in variably undersold due to the ignorance of the sellers. We need to monetise your skill, Poodling. The technology must exist somewhere to exploit your magic gift or please just tell us how you do it! :)

Ha ha ! This really made me laugh in a very good way !

Of course, all good stories or jokes are based in reality at least a little bit.

For example, I must admit that I didn't want this for my collection but I wish I knew that Jamie wanted one of these before-hand because I would have bought it for him.

I thought it was worth maybe over £1,000, so the value is slightly less it seems.

I did buy a gramophone for my collection fairly recently which I think is amazing, so I still 'plough on'.

I am lucky sometimes I must admit.

Happy days always and onto the next one !

What I thought was interesting about this was that the box does not state 'gramophone needles' but 'steel points'

Which seemed odd to me - there is probably a good reason but .............

It’s a fair point that I also wondered about. I have observed that gramophone needles often wholesaled in boxes of 5000. The only other use I could think of was steel points for darts.
