FBM: What is this curious machine?

This appears to be a curious drawer mounted small cabinet machine. Does anybody know what it is?
I am also a bit confused by the cabinet construction. One side looks like it has a desk-like foot/leg well.

Columbia 'Regent' Grafonola - the 'desk' model.

Columbia made many models that look like furniture from desks to large phone tables . I have one and it surprises a lot of people when I crank it up.

Somehow this post, intended as single thread, ended up unravelling into two strands. The site was unresponsive a little when I first posted, and I ended up with two identical posts without noticing. The two strands have gone off in their own directions.
