Edison Diamond Disk Spring Barrels

Post by recordo »

My C-19 has been playing up. I had both springs replaced about two years ago, but now they are not catching on their centres - the machine won't wind up. I have taken both barrels apart and can see that for some reason the inner most parts of the springs have bent out of shape. Does anyone here have an easy way of reshaping the centres without having to pull both springs out? If it was just one, I wouldn't mind, but it's both (I'm assuming it would play half as long if one spring was still OK?). The chap that replaced the springs for me will fix it gratis but I live hours away and I really want to play some disks soon!

Thanks - Glenn.

Glenn,

I encounter this problem often with Victor motors so maybe this will work for Edisons too. When this happens to me I use pliers to clamp down on and reform the coil so it grips the arbor properly. This can usually be done while the spring is in the barrel. Hope that helps!

Thanks Brad,

I must be a weakling because the spring was so hard to bend - seems to me that Edison springs are thicker. I've changed/greased my HMV springs (and a Victor too) and it was never as difficult as the Edison.

thanks for your suggestion, I'm going to give it another try.

regards, Glenn.

True, those Edison springs are pretty thick so it may be tough to bend. It may be necessary to
remove the spring and place it in a vice perhaps to get better leverage. I guess that's all I can
come up with. Good luck!
