Is Something Wrong Here??

Post by phononut »

Hello
I just spotted this on kjiji and something looks wrong with the tonearm and the base. Is it cut of? Any info appreciated

Also the guy was asking $150.00. I could probably get it down to 100. What seems a fair price?

Thanks
Brad :)

The more I look at it it is obvious its a frankenphone. How much would be reasonable price for parts?

Well, it started out life as a VV-IX table model -- http://www.victor-victrola.com/IX.htm -- but based on the photos I see:

1) Wrong tonearm. (You can see the redundant screw holes.)

2) Replaced Motor (The original crank hole is visible farther back)

3) Replaced speed control (redundant hole nearby.)

4) Missing turntable spindle (godknowswhathappenedtoit...)

5) Missing sound box.

6) Lid support is toast.

Ask him to give you ten bucks to haul it away. Seriously, unless you could use a VV-IX case in fair to poor condition, I don't think it's worth much of anything.

After reading the previous post, it does not appear to be something to consider, in my opinion. Perhaps you could consider buying just the record on the turntable.

sadly, the thing is a mess. it might be worthwhile if you needed it for the parts, but it's difficult to tell - beyond the tonearm and reproducer - what you might even be getting there.

The only thing this has going for it is that it is oak. You could fix nearly everything by robbing a poor condition mahogany version...except the second crank hole. Still, if you can get it absolutely dirt cheap it's salvageable.

You can rule out the reproducer - there doesn't appear to be one there. (Should be a Columbia Analyzing on that tonearm).

Well, the tonearm looks to be from a Columbia external horn machine, that's why it's pointing left. That alone can get some money on eBay. Then some of the other parts... So the idea to part it out might not be to bad in this Franken case. Some people might be able to complete original machines missing parts.

That entire tone arm and base is wrong- if it hasn't been glued in place or the mounting board ruined it should be possible to remove it and replace it with a proper Victor arm and base.
