Billie Holiday's only recording with Artie Shaw

Post by beaumonde »

I love to play this on my Radiola 47, but decided yesterday to transfer it (along with all my other Artie Shaw records). I was surprised how gray the grooves are (would grade it as "V"), but it sounds surprisingly good, considering.

Any Old Time (a Shaw composition) NY, 24-July-1938

Note the sex-change for Billie on the label!

Thanks, Adam, for posting this. Your transfers are always so good!
And thanks for continuing to post other than through youtube.
I tried playing a download of this file, but for some reason it isn't recognized by any of my programs! :( It plays in the provided link, however.

If anyone else has problems downloading and playing the file, please let me know. I was able to, no problem.

Glad you like it, Bob! It's a rare one.

Great record Adam, and you are right. It sounds really good.

One of my favourite tunes - I never realised she recorded it. Thanks for sharing this rare one. Really enjoyed it.

Her record of Your Mother's Son-In-Law with Benny Goodman, is a rare disc.

I heard she and Benny were dating at the time she made it (1933).

Billie's record with Benny (on which she also was labeled as 'Billy' btw) was her first issued one. It sold far better in Europe than in the U.S. and is not that rare over here. In fact I think that session was targeted at the European market as was so much jazz and jazz oriented music at the time. In Europe jazz records still sold quite well. In the U.S. they were dead on their feet.

Anyway, this one might not be rare, but this is the only copy I've found!
