Stylus needed for Pathé

Post by JohnEmery »

Found this Pathé last week on craigslist. It is missing the stylus. Also, the threaded shank that holds the pivoting tone arm to the black mounting flange is broken. Any help with these parts or info on sources will be greatly appreciated!

George Vollema of Great Lakes Antique Phonograph should be able to fix you up. He has tons of old parts, and I got my Pathé saphire needle from him.

there was another post here yesterday with links to a few other dealers' web sites (where Pathé styluses could be found), one of which I hadn't heard of before. why was that post deleted?

That was my mistake. I had posted three links, and found another last night and was going to add it to the list, but then accidentally deleted the post. In any event, here they are:

thanks.

I was told at one point that the reproduction Pathé needles not only used glass instead of saphire for the tip, but also could damage records if not cut properly. would you know if that's true?

I've heard that some less than honest suppliers do, but never anything negative about Expert Stylus' Pathé shanks. Probably the more hardcore Pathé-philes would know. I noticed they state "Sapphire" on the package, so I'd think (hope) they're being honest.

One thing I haven't found is a website for Expert Stylus--only sites that refer users to them.

The Expert Pathé styli are great, I landed one for 10 bucks still sealed with a bunch of steel needle packs from an ignorant ebay seller. Ron Sitko had a bunch of NOS Pathé styli a few years back for $30 each, I bought 4 of them and stocked up. He doesn't have any left, but he's got new ones, a friend of mine bought one and it looked and sounded great to me without damaging the discs. I don't know how you would be able to tell if it was glass, though.

The one I got from George sounds great as well, and he has a good reputation in the community.
