Dazed & Confused: When did VV-IV"s get "new" case design?

Post by 1923VictorFan »

Hi All,
I found a VV-IV this morning on eBay and it has my very tiny newbie mind confused. Every VV-IV I have ever seen had a very plain, hinged motor board with simple trim and a crank arm located towards the front of the case. The link below shows a VV-IV that has the same features as my Victrola VI. (more ornate trim & motor board with the crank towards the rear).

Is this a more seldom seen design or is something not right?

No, AFAIK everything looks correct, according to what I find in Baumbach's Victor Data Book. According to the serial number the listed machine was manufactured in 1919. The VV-IV cabinet design showed continued improvement over the years of production, along with a different motor design, moving the escutcheon further back on the right side of the cabinet.

FWIW, we don't see nearly enough use of the old tried-and-true ones from the '40s, like SNAFU and FUBAR---IMO!
