Marbleized Pathé 78 records

While sorting through a bunch of so-so 78 records last night, I came across two marbleized Pathé 78 records in their original Pathé paper sleeves. They are both black with dark red swirls of color mixed in. Very pretty records. What is the history of these records, years made, etc? I assume they are just a gimmick of some sort to attract buyers to the Pathé record brand? Just curious. Brian Keith

I have a couple of those as well, Pathé needle cut lateral records (Pathé Actuelle). I didn't notice anything special about them, except for the gimmick factor. They may get a little bit higher prices on eBay, but show up pretty often, so nothing rare.

Both of my marbleized Pathé records say "needle-cut" on them, so are they playable on any 78 phonograph? (like this photo)

Yes, Pathé switched to needle cut / lateral records in the 20s. They can be played on any 78 phonograph.

From Copeland & Dethlefson's Pathé book, it appears that these mottled Pathé records (called Chanticleers in advertising) date from June 26 through June 27. This promotional idea "did not impress the record buying public" and apparently they did not sell well, especially as many of the titles were also available in cheaper regular records under the "Perfect" label. Because of the limited sales they are rarer than regular Pathés.
