Victrola turntable stuck on spindle

Post by Ampico66 »

I'm helping fix a Victrola XI. The turntable is rusted to the spindle. Anybody have any advice on removing it?

Kroil, let it soak at least over night and gently tap it with a rubber mallet. You may have to do this for a couple of days.

If Kroil is not readily available, try silicone spray or a penetrating lubricant such as Power Lube (a/k/a CRC-556), available at hardware stores. WD-40 is a last resort.

Sometimes it helps to have someone gently pull up on the turntable while it is being tapped with a rubber mallet. With the most difficult ones, you can remove the spindle with the turntable still attached. Next, open a vise slightly bigger than the spindle and place the spindle through the open jaws of the vice and tap more forcefully. You might place a piece of wood between the top of the spindle and the mallet or hammer. The vice will support the turntable and prevent it from being damaged. If that doesn't work, send me a PM and I'll forward my "plumbing words". They don't really hellp but I feel better. Jerry

If you get to this point without success, put the turntable and spindle in the freezer for an hour. Then take it out and heat the turntable gently with a butane torch. The contraction of the entire assembly during freezing followed by the expansion of the turntable with heat should separate the two. Don't be overly agressive with the heat.
