F/S NICE and scarce Edison Model S 2/4 reproducer SOLD!!

Post by john9ten »

Hello all
I got hit with a 6,000 plumbing bill last week, so I need to thin out some items. Here is a MINTISH Edison Model S reproducer, 2/4 minute, that will fit any standard Edison carriage on a Standard, Gem, Home, Fireside or Triumph. It fits in the carriage like a model K, but it has a bigger diaphragm like a model O, so you can get O-ish sound without getting a horizontal mount carriage.
This reproducer is so nice, I really hate to part with it!
Here's the best part - It is pot metal, but it is the high quality product that Edison used after the war. According to Steve Medved, reproducers of this type afte number 5500 (is that right Steve?) were made of a much better ratio of metals, and did not degrade like the earlier stock. If you did not know this was pot metal, you would think it is brass. The surfaces are smooth, the engraved lettering is crisp, even the locating slot is still squared and unbroken. This reproducer is completely rebuildable, and in fact it was rebuilt. All parts come apart easily.
It plays loud and clear, and is a great reproducer for your favorite records.
Asking price is $250.00 OBO, plus shipping. That's comparable to a nice model K on ebay, for gosh sakes!! Help me put my plumbing back together!
Thanks
John Robles

John,

Next time you ask me a question send me the link so I can answer. At $250 it is a good deal this is the only S I know of with a brass bottom that separated easily, most of the time you have to use an offset screwdriver to separate them and the compression ring is hard to get out, I had to drill the one out. I would guess it would sell for at least $300 on eBay with me writing the ad.

If the S sold I will be happy to anwer any questions the new owner may have.

This is a very late S, another reason it is rare, and normally the late ones would have the pot metal bottom, but Edison was not organized and used earlier parts on later reproducers. In 1910 you see model C reproducers with the solid weight from 1902 on some of them as Edison cleaned shop and found old parts.

This is the late dome top reproducer with stable pot metal like the diamond B. The O and N share serial numbers and the early dome top appeared around 41,000 and by 50,000 it is seldome seen except for in the early 60,000 to 63,000 when they appear again this time it seems in the good pot metal. The late dome top appears in the 41,000 range, and in the 46,000 range but is not seen often until 50,000.

The flat top is not seen above 42,000 except for in the 53,000 range when it appears on the model N.

The R and S share serial numbers. The same large top is used on the R S O N and N-56. The last large tops were made universal so the top could be made into an N O R or S. The R and S have a shoe adapter to allow it to fit in the small carriage. On the R and S the late dome top appears sometime in the 24,000 range and 30,716 is the highest S I have seen so that means less than 8,000 of the late dome top R and S was made.

The N-56 used the R and S serial numbers, but I do not know if they stopped the R&S as the N-56 is found in the 31,000 range. The N-56 is found with the O&N serial numbers in the 70,000 and 71,000 range. The N and N-56 were the last large tops made as both were used on the amberolas that took the diamond B to play wax amberols.
