I came across this listing on eBay and at first glance thought it was a tinfoil machine. But looking closer, I am not sure what it may be. I haven't seen anything like it before, (which isn't saying much) and thought I would check with evryone here. Was this machine electric? There appears to be a contact comb of some sort touching both ends of the shaft that are attached to the base with what look like screw type terminals of some sort. There isn't evidence of a recording or speaker attachment so maybe this isn't phono related at all? sorry to only post the link. I haven't figured out a screenshot function yet.

No, it's not a tinfoil phonograph, but my knowledge of electrical apparatus is pitiful. Looks like a rheostat to me.

Didn't think of it being a rheostat. You are probably right about that. Either way, here is a screenshot of the listing for record.
