My daughter picked up a mahogany L-door XVI for me a while back and I thought it had a broken spring. I took it apart and the springs are all right but something is missing. The winding gear just slides on the post that engages the springs but doesn't have any way to wind the thing. I saw the indentation on the side of the gear and thought maybe there was a small piece missing that would go through the post and engage the gear but do not see a hole in the post. What am I not seeing??
Thanks for any advice- Steve

Re: XVI motor question
There should be a pin passing through the shaft, and when you replace the gear, the pin sits across the slot in the gear & prevents it from rotating on the shaft. If you clean the shaft, you should see where the pin has sheered off. Just punch out what remains of the pin & replace it. I've used a nail to replace it in a jam, but mild steel isn't a good way to go really. You're better off to use a high tensile or stainless steel pin, which is far stronger so it wont sheer off easily again.

Re: XVI motor question
Hi Steve:
I just looked carefully at the (large version of the) photo and noticed what appears to be the "pin" Shane is referring to.
If it broke off flush, then it might be pretty hard to spot. I don't see any sign of it from the side of the shaft photographed, but it's there, somewhere.

Wow, I gotta get new glasses. I hadn't thought about the pin shearing off and do see where it should go through the shaft. Thanks Gents!!
