I got the attached picture from someone selling a 4-20, a machine I've never seen in person. My concern is the "open air" to the left of the motor board. Is that "normal" for this machine? Is it supposed to be for record storage?

Yes. Unlike all of the other floor model Victrolas produced, the 4-20 is the only one that did not provide record storage space accessible via the front doors. As Baumbach notes, in "Look for the Dog," there was space for a single record storage album adjacent to the turntable.

Looks like it's missing the turntable.
I can also spy typical pot metal damage and deterioration around the tone arm support.
