Victor Machines Made Expressly For Businesses

Found this listed on Craigs list and was wondering if this was something that was commonly done by the Victor Co. http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/atq/2877445186.html

I think it was a common practice for dealers to add their own decals or even plates to phonographs after delivery from the factories. This sticker is a bit more unusual than most!

Nothing unusual about the machine so my guess is that the decal was applied by Rix rather than Victor. I don't think I'd play any jazz records on it...

There were machines made by Victor for commercial use. The Vic 5 was recommended for use in schools. It was followed by the Victor School Model and a couple of Orthophonic Victrolas made specifically for schools and commercial use. Victor's first commercial machine was the Auxetophone. It was a machine that amplified the volume and its intended use was in hotels and any place that large groups of people gathered.

The interesting feature of the little VV-VI is the dealer applied decal. It's too bad is not in a little better condition.

Sometimes you see very prominent dealer plates and transfers on less expensive machines like this- I think the dealer would have offered them at a good discount knowing that the buyer was doing some advertising.

Seems that the Rix Furniture & Undertaking Company sold a variety of items including musical instruments, etc., so it makes sense that they would have affixed their store's name on the cabinet. (I've seen dozens of Victrolas marked with the names of music stores.)

That sounds right. I too have seen alot of dealer labels but usually they are quite small. I can't imagine buying a new Victrola with that advertisement on it though. That's why I thought maybe it was a model that Victor discounted to the business as I know that Victrolas were often used at funeral homes. Jan
