Finally done with my Home bedplate

This is one of my better pieces. The bedplate had virtually no pitting and it turned out beautiful. Wyatts water transfers are very nice in my opinion. Of course the pinstriping is by hand. I remember asking if they had pinstriping for edisons and they said, "Oh those are easy, do those by hand". lol. I thought to myself, "If you could only see my hands shake when I try to do anything. lol

Now I have the motor done, bedplate done. Waiting on some governor weights from wyatts. One was broke off. I went ahead and got three. Has anyone just weighed the broken one and just filed the replacement to same weight to replace?

Very nice Job indeed. How did you get the gold line so straight? Using Tape as a guide? I can't even see the decal edges on the "Trade Mark" signature decal. Did you clear laquer over it to hide the decal edges?

Looks like a 1905-1906 Edison Home Model B by the bedplate and paintwork. The earlier Model B's 1903-1904 had a gold scroll at the right side of the bedplate.

yes I used painters tape to make each line and waited for it to dry then added the 90 degree line and went like that. Took a while. I'm sure I won't get $$ for the hours i'm putting into it. I just enjoy doing it. This one didn't have the scrolls (swoops) on the end. I was really surprised how bad the paint was and how good the actual metal was under. Really no pitting as you would find on alot of them. I did put a coat over it, BUT, the water transfers from Wyatt's are very nice and i literally couldn't see the edges before coating. I just like their stuff.

The pin stripe can be done by hand using an engineers pen, most compass sets will have them. They have an adjustable tip like jaws for use with ink, you can get a really nice fine line. I used a match to load the gold paint from the top of the tip so as not to over load it. Using your finger to guide along the straight edge draw your line. I used a product called Jo Sonja's decorative painting system made by Chrome Inc USA. You can mix the golds to match the original, works well and if at first you don't succeed you can wipe it off before it dries.

I've experimented with quite a few Gold paints.. and I have found that the
Testor's Model Master "Gold" #1744 is a Dead Ringer for the Edison Gold. Tamiya's "Gold Leaf" was close, but a little darker and not good enough.

Here are two examples of early Edison Home models I restored. First picture shows the application of custom made decals from Gregg Cline. His site is phonodecal.com. The corner tufts, and the lines are decals, carefully applied. You can add brown tone to them with orange shellac. The second picture shows a corner tuft and lines I applied and aged to an original bedplate, so it would match the 3 extant originals. Few dashes of black paint with a horse hair. Seal with orange shellac, then rub with steel wool lightly to bring age.
