Just in case there's another person out there who finds it interesting that many of these songs recorded in the early 20th century on cylinder and disc became popular (and still are popular) folk songs in Europe or at least in the Czech Republic.

Michal Tučný the vocalist here re-recorded many old American ballads before his death some years back. He remains very popular today.

With all due respect to the Czech people, some things just don't translate well.

Now, if your heard "Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer" on a QRS piano roll, it's actually much better than the sung version!

My father (Now 76) is a full blown "off the boat" Czech, and let me tell you, Czech is a very difficult slavik language to learn. Bohemia(Think Beer) which encompasses the Czech republic and Germany (Both countries border on each other), German is a breeze to learn as a language, 40 years later, I still have no clue what my father is saying when he is on the phone with relatives from CZ.. When he speaks German, I can just about make out everything..lol...

Just so you get an idea...!

Yea the Czech language is very diffcult to learn, not at all like German or English or French for example. Some similarity with Polish, Russian and other Slavic languages but that's not much help if you are starting out as an English speaker!
