Today I was lucky to pick up a Victor ( by the decal ) wood 22" horn.
By looking at another site I saw a Vic lll had one of this type and they called it a speartip wood horn.
Can anyone let me know what model machines these came with and any other info on it.

Unfortunately, I am only somewhat familiar with Victor internal and columbia Standard external horn machines.

Really appreciate any insight.

You didn't say whether it was oak or mahogany, but if oak it would fit the III and V and if mahogany the IV and VI. And of course earlier Victor machines that had the larger horn elbow.

I also should have mentioned that the spearpoint/speartip horn was $25.00 extra. The machines I mentioned would have come with the basic black and brass horn (earlier) or the black flowered horn.

Sorry...It looks mahogany ( very dark).......The tip of the end cone is 1 ⅝".

Were the machines you mentioned then in mahogany? Or were they sold on any type.

It would be nice to find a machine that needed a horn........lol

Hi Mike,

The Vics III & V were in oak (though the late V could be found in mahogany too) and the Vics IV & VI were mahogany. Shellac will darken over time plus smoke (yeah, a lot of ppl. did that back then!) and will make it hard to tell w/o seeing the grain.
You will have a better chance finding a machine sans horn as they seem to have been seperated not uncommonly over the years than you would if you needed a horn.

I am note sure of the wood by grain, but is reddish.........I have tried to attach some photos. Hopefully, you can tell from these.

Really appreciate your help. I restored a Columbia standard for my sone last year. That had a morninglory horn.....he loved it. This would be a nice gift for him for next year with the right machine........At least if I know what to match it with, I can look around.

So these are not to common to find??

Excellent photos! I’ll let someone else comment on how common or rare that horn is (I know very little about external horn machines), but I wanted to comment on the photos and that I was glad to see you were able to use the attachment feature here.

That was a great horn to find loose without a machine. I can't quite tell if it is oak or mahogany from the pictures.....shellac has a funny way of changing color over the years. If it is mahogany I would be on the lookout for a Vic IV to put under it. If you found a machine without the horn and nice you'd be looking in the $1400 range, a Vic VI would set you back $3500 or more. Once together you'd have a fabulous set up.

is there a good way to clean up the surface so I could really tell if it was Oak or Mahogany?

So by what was said so far, it would pay to try and find a machine to match it up with.

The inside ( lower only, has some loss......about 9 pieces of the rounded sections right under the spears)

It caught my eye right away.......as I have ( on a columbia and edison) the metal horns, but have never seen a wood.

Yes you have a Victor mahogany horn and as mentioned earlier was made for the Victor IV, VI and late V. You have a nice find as these mahogany speartip horns are hard to find. You mostly find them in oak which was more common. I would just use a mild cleaner on it and dark paste wax and be happy.
