Agree that it sure looks like a fake.

It IS a fake. The tonearm comes from a circa-early 1930s Columbia portable "Plano-Reflex" gramophone. It's been turned upside-down. I can't tell what sound box is on the tonearm, but the mfg's plate looks phony; either that, or it was taken from a junker internal horn Victrola.

The turntable, controls, angled-crank--probably the motor--look to have all came from portables. The case is newly made to look old. The horn--also newly made--is probably made out of cheaply plated & stamped tin.

uptoyouekin,

I've seen several like this for sale on ebay, but before spending the money to ship something like this to Australia, you should know that it has zero value as a collectible. In the hobby, this is known as a "Crap-O-Phone," and if you google that, you'll come up with a number of sites that provide information and warnings about these machines. Normally, these don't work at all, or if they do, they will wear out very quickly--sometimes after only a few plays.

Uptoyouekin,

David is right. This one is really junk. There are many on this forum who can give you advice on better options, some in Australia and New Zealand too. Don't be in a big hurry. Now's a good time to buy good quality machines but be careful.

Up to you ekin,

As previous posters have said, this machine is junk and the postage from anywhere to Australia would
- cost more than the minimal value of the machine
- be money wasted,

For a top manufacturer like Victor there are references on the web as well as books where you can see all the victor models, and there are not too may different styles of victor external horn machines.

What you pictured is not one of them
- victor never made a case in that style
- tone arm is from a columbia portable
- at a guess the motor is too
- Victor made a few easily identifiable horn styles - this kitsch is not one of them

To see 3 identical machines next to each other should also set off warning bells

A couple of this board's members live in Australia, and they're probably in a better position to give you some advice. One, Gramophoneshane, has his own forum devoted to Australian talking machines -- http://australiangramophone.proboards.com/

And, while I don't know how active it is today, you might also want to get in touch with the Phonograph Society of New South Wales to see if there are any members living in your area -- http://www.phonographsociety.org/index.php/home

If you should spot anything of interest, by all means ask about it here.
