Victrola XX-VI- Help with removal of spring axle shaft

Post by vfr800fiman »

Hi all, first post in this forum.
I tried asking this question in the phonograph forum at antiqueradios (my usual hangout), but no one knew. They suggested I post over here, so here goes.

My Wife just bought this machine, so now I'm in the process of rebuilding the motor. My first question is how do you remove the shaft that goes through the spring barrels? I removed the set screw that holds the ratchet on, but the shaft doesn't want to slide out. I assume it slides out in the direction of the winding gears side? I didn't want to force anything with a drift punch and small hammer. This machine is a two spring unit, with each spring in a separate barrel.

I watched the six part video on YouTube, so I'm pretty familiar with how everything comes apart. The unit that he demonstrated on has a slightly different spring barrel setup than mine though.

Any guidance would be helpful.

A little background on me. I'm an ME, and have worked on my Edison Amberola before, so I'm familiar with spring motors. This is however my first venture into these new fangled "disc" machines :)

This is the motor that's similar to mine, except it has the single spring barrel. The winding gear side of the casting is different from mine. Mine has the bearing support on the inside of the gear, not the outside like this one.

I seemed to have stumped everyone.
Here's what mine looks like:

Note the bearing support is inboard of the winding gear set.

Removing the winding ratchet should be all you need to do. Don't go nuts on it, but try tapping it some. Yes, it should drive out towards the winding gears. What might be holding it up is a wear step in the shaft where it runs in the motor frame.

Thanks for the reply Jerry.
I really wanted to make sure the shaft went in that direction before trying to tap on the end.
I'll give it a try tonight.

This is really the only thing holding me up in getting started.

Thanks again!

How is the torque transmitted from the shaft to the ID of the spring barrel? Since the worm wheel is on the OD of the spring can, the ID must be driven to wind the spring. Is there a key way or spline on the side of the shaft towards the winding gear set?

Edit:
Is there a drawing showing all the parts in these motors and how they fit together? A patent drawing would be good also.

Update-
I got the shaft out with just light tapping. It just had a slight wear ring on it where it passes through he bearing blocks.

Now I have the outer canister on the bench with the top removed. This is the can that wasn't winding/winding slightly then making the typical rumbling sound while turning.

I got the inner shaft out, and it looked like it was hooked correctly over the spring end since it took a bit of effort to open the inner coils to remove it. Is the part the spring hooks over supposed to have a sloped side to it? Is it supposed to look like the rivet on the inside of the can (other end of the spring?) It looks like that on one side, the side that the spring hooks over. The other side is ground off, or worn off at an angle. I just don't know if this is the way it's supposed to look. I couldn't find a picture of the inner mandrel on the web.

Anyway, I'm still contemplating if I want to try to remove the spring myself. I'm mechanically inclined, and do all my own repairs on just about everything. This just has that intimidation factor :)

make sure you have a good hold on the spring at all times when removing, when I did my first one I was told to put it in an old pillow case but it seemed to have a better chance of getting away inside there, although that's why you do it in a pillow case, and wear leather gloves that fit pretty good

Thanks.
I thought the same thing about doing it inside a pillowcase.

I have some nice tight fitting mechanics gloves that I'll probably use. What the heck, they're covered
In grease already! I'll probably wear a heavy long sleeved sweatshirt as well as safety glasses.
