If one gently rubs the surface of a hill-and-dale disc between thumb and forefinger, one will find that they have a distinct 'feel' to them due to the uniform width of the groove and groove walls perpendicular to the surface of the record. I have long said that I can pick out h&d records in a dark room for this reason.

The Pathé Hill and Dale cut was simply a 2-minute cylinder cut put on a disc master---same size groove. While there is a certain feel to a hill and dale disc, I have a hard time when it's a smaller groove, like the early Paramount or Aeolian Vocalion and OkeH Indian head discs. ;) Bob Ault

Except that those discs can play longer than two minutes... ;)
