Question: Are splatter wax cylinders possible?
I love "splatter wax" disc records just for the color variations... Have splatter wax or resin cylinders been made or are they even possible to make?

Yes, I think something approximating a "splatter" finish would be possible, Multicolored Catalin plastic radios were molded from a poured resin and they had unique patterns.

Curious = were the Pathé splatter disc records just a sales gimmick? I still like looking at them though

Probably, but not really sure why they started doing them - maybe to stand out from the other all black shellac records. The vibrantly colored 1916 Aeolian Vocalion records are amazing along with the later multicolored Morrison records.briankeith wrote:Curious = were the Pathé splatter disc records just a sales gimmick?

Oh sometimes the wax does splatter things, and those are usually rejected!!! Those new resin cylinders can easily be spattered with different colors. Wax is hard to keep the color spatters somewhat constant, as the wax darkens and wants to go brown, I have used candle dye and colored cylinders too!

- The cylinder on the left is not considered desirable by recordists or cylinder makers. It can be caused by too much hydrated alumina (stearic acid deficiency), also not conditioned yet, a virgin wax will do this, or burnt ceresin, and thus a rejected cylinder. If anyone wants blanks like this, let me know, they would be discounted greatly, an $8.00 blank, instead of the $45.00 one. as I don't consider these salable. I have ways of recycling them to make blanks like the solid, perfect one on the right, in the picture, that one is a good blank.

Shawn,
Those reject splattered cylinders should record OK, right? If so, could you record some for me?

Resin cylinders spattered with multi-colors would be great... especially if they could be made like the Aeolian Vocalion record pictured below...

I could make something by Union. I only have 2. I have done lots research to avoid it from happening, some make noise and some don't add anything sonically, just an embarrassment, when it happens.
