 I also collect Victorian furniture, and I search Craigslist for 'Victorian' as well. If you think the phono listings are bad, you should see the butchery in the 'Victorian' listings! It isn't at all uncommon to see listings for "Ford Crown Victorians". What the heck are these people smoking???

My pet peeve is that no one seems to know what Mahogany is: machines are almost always Oak or "Cherry".

Back in the States I once had a visitor come to my house with a friend, his new girlfriend. She referred to the Edison Standard with petaled horn I had set up in the livingroom as "a nostalgia".

One of my pet peeves is that the word 'wood' is almost always added after the word 'cherry'. Oak is just "oak" (or "solid oak", or "tiger oak"*), mahogany is misspelled half the time, but cherry is almost always "cherry wood" -- "Old RCA Victrola in cherry wood cabinet" -- makes my flesh crawl! I mean, what do they think we think they mean: cherry flavor???

*"tiger oak" gets on my last good nerve, too . . . it's quarter-sawn oak, dammit! And Edison cylinder Phonographs don't have "dovetail" joints -- those are finger joints!

I feel better now!
