Quite surprising, from someone who normally does not have a lot to say.
11 replies, and two pages.

But then, the board could just be carrion that the 'buzzards' haven't spotted yet.Edisonfan wrote: Even, though both John and David have not been around on here much. I have not seen any real problems.

They're circling somewhere, by gosh.

Re: O/T Used to have a lot to say?
I think any mention of buzzards circling is very premature. Sure, there is room for improvement in virtually anything, but just take a look at the other phono-boards that sprang up at the same time as this one did. Those have as many individual posts as this board has topics (and combined, still have less than half the posts on this board). This is still, by far, the most active phono-board that I am aware of. Case in point, a new member posted a question on this board requesting info about a first purchase. He posted the exact same question on another board, one hour earlier. This board generated 15 responses, the other board 5. Let's not forget, we are still recovering from a recession, and phonographs are not exactly on top of everyone's lists of necessities. I'm sure the vast majority of us are not spending as much as we did a few years ago, and what generates more posts than recent purchases? I'm also sure that many folks aren't deciding to jump into the hobby right now, again as money is a little tight (although with the lowered demand, it certainly is a buyers market, and prices have taken a dive). Most of my postings have been in replies to others, since my recent purchases have been limited, and I'm still trying to finish the same project I've been working on for years (my Oak VTLA...almost finished...I promise). When you're not adding to your collection, I'm guessing your number of posts also drops.
Could things be better? Sure...but we still are head and shoulders above any "competition."

Excellent points, Zeppy, all of them. We certainly are way ahead of the others and I think that says a lot. This is a great group of people here.
Things go in cycles, and as you've pointed out, if we aren't getting new things, we aren't posting. I know that my life doesn't completely revolve around phonographs either. I have been rather heavily involved with a number of non-phono and record related projects around my house lately that have kept me away from the hobby more than I'd like to be. Things happen. My "projects" have piled up and I can't wait until I have more time to start going full force back into things. I'm still very upset I can't make the Wayne show in a few weeks, but it is what it is, the economy certainly has played a major part in my ability to continue to upgrade my collection. Machines and even records that I used to sell with no problems are barely generating interest, and if I can't sell things off to upgrade, I can't get anything new. My storage spaces are all almost full beyond capacity.

Re: O/T Used to have a lot to say?
Can I get a discussion going or what?
I think what it is Jim, is that since I have not acquired anything new! I have not really had anything to contribute. Also since I am not a real expert, but not a complete novice, I can not always help out? I could try, but there are members on here with more experience, then me.
Look, were all adults here and we have managed to keep things friendly. There are enough decent people, on here to help each other out.
At least I was able to generate a discussion, even if it's not phono related. Plus this board has been 1000 times better, then the last board I was part of. At one point, it got so bad, I deleted my account completely. As long as we avoid, topics such as politics, religion, and the news, and try to stay on the focus of this board. We will continue to thrive. Plus the fact that I stated in the Thread tittle, that this was going to be an Off Topic Thread, helped. It also alerts other members, that the following thread is not phono related. Granted not everyone on here does an O/T, but once in a while, it's nice to get away from a phono related thread. Breaks the monotony. Provided, it stays friendly.
If you can't say something nice, Don't Write it!

Re: O/T Used to have a lot to say?
Paul,
I’d intended to reply to your initial post on Monday (before all of the replies), but didn’t get around to writing something. Despite what Dean seems to believe, I’m still on here on a regular basis. Just because you don’t see me posting anything doesn’t mean that I’m gone. (I approved 2 guest posts during my break while at work from my phone.)
I still see John on a regular basis, as he lives 3 doors down the street from me and can often be found on the floor above me in Stan’s apartment. He’s doing well...a bit busy with other things in his life, but he’ll be back sooner or later. We’ve talked about it a few times.
To anyone else:
If you want something, follow Sean’s advice, although I’d suggest sending an e-mail instead of a private message; I’ll read it within less time of you sending it, although I read my private messages promptly as well. I’ll respond to you as soon as I have time.
But I’d appreciate a bit of courtesy if it comes to that—keep in mind that I am very busy with work (as well as pretending to have at least some life outside of it) and that contrary to popular belief, I do continue to help maintain this forum.

I too have been affected by noticeably less income but am fortunately still working. In spite of less income, bills remain the same or go up. It means less $$$ to buy things from people like Sean. As a result I've bought little in the past year except the occasional record, one reproducer and some trinkets even though there's been some nice stuff out there.OrthoSean wrote:Excellent points, Zeppy, all of them. Surely many people who's income have not been impacted are exercising caution and trying to save a bit instead of spending it on their hobbies too...

Thank You David. I was just concerned, I figured you were busy. I should have left that last part about if you and John, were still around, out. I apologize for that.
Sean has the right advice.
