source for new Edison bedplate screws?

Post by Mormon S »

I often find that Edison machines are missing some bedplate screws when I get them, and I sometimes loose a few. It really bugs me that some of my machines are missing bedplate screws, and people don't generally sell them loose. Do the screws match any modern standards and is there anyone who supplies proper replacements? Thanks!

I may be able to help.

The company "Blacksmith Bolt" seems to have a category for Phonograph Screws -- though I am not sure which fits the Edisons.

I'm going by memory here, since I am at work. But I believe it's just a #4 or #6 round head wood screw, probably ¾" long. Blacksmith Bolt does indeed have this size in stock. I've bought from them before, they're great! https://www.blacksmithbolt.com/store/c/ ... crews.aspx

There are a lot of different screws used in Edison bedplates. Wood screws, round head machine screws, pan head machine screws, set screws, etc. Are you referring to a particular screw, or just interested in all of the above?

I have an old lathe I picked up years ago for next for nothing and make my own screws. I bought 3 x ¼ inch bolts from Lowes, turned them down on the lathe and then cut the threads with a die.

Here are the ones I made for my Amberola 50 bed plate. The bluing was done with a propane torch. Cannot tell the difference from an original screw.
