I can hear the governor rattling more at the beginning of the credenza video. I had problems with one of my machines with the governor, and it made pronounced fluttering in the music until it was repaired. that would explain some of the sound quality difference between the two machines.

I would consider replacing the leather piece that provides friction to the governor. At the least, roughen the end with some sandpaper, and make sure it's soaked well in oil. I've seen some that are hard felt instead of leather. Check the surface of the governor disc for any damage. You may need to replace the springs or the weights, or both, but I would rule out other problems first.

No, I didn't use the same soundbox. I kept them as original as possible. I know the soundbox makes big differences, but I like the original status. When I use the orthophonic brass reproducer on HMV 202, it is too loud even I used a fiber needle. Real good machines should be able to create great sound even with fiber (bamboo) needles. Steel needles make so much scratch noises and too loud and leave particles of iron, which might cause rust. Bamboo needles prevent mold growing on the records.anchorman wrote: Fri Nov 04, 2022 1:46 pm did you use the same soundbox in both videos? It's astounding the difference a soundbox can make. I've made up an adapter so that I can play Columbia number 9 on my HMV 102 portable, and it sounds very much like the number 9 on the 112a.
I think I prefer the 202, the motor seems to be smoother? slightly brighter sound too.
Of course my HMV 202 has an Oil-bath motor No.52, so it is so quiet and smooth. HMV 202 has metal horn, which make brighter sound. But with the brass orthophonice reproducer two-door Credenza sounds great too.
Both are great instrumnets. I love them all.
