The rectangular Ivorine plaque was introduced in 1936, incorporating a "B" prefix indicating the year of manufacture.
UK 102's from 1936 onwards have this plaque and prefix. The plaque on the machine under discussion does not have this prefix.
Indian made machines are a law unto themselves, so this anomaly may remain a mystery.

Despite these failings it will probably still make more than I paid for mine.
This one does have a lot of potentially amazing provenance though and of course the seller is posting it - a miracle in itself !
I don't see the amazing provenance but perhaps I've missed something? It's a pity the condition is quite so poor too.

Are you being serious ? With respect, your comment surprises me.

What do you think the word 'provenance' means ?

What I am not saying is that this item is genuine. I am also not saying it isn't. I don't know.

What I find odd is that there hasn't been more interest in this thread, no meaningful discussion other than condition, which might be considered strange when seeing the many previous forum comments about Indian Teak gramophones, including HMV 102's.

Yes, I'm serious. I know what provenance means; I have a handful of machines which have interesting provenances including earlier ownership by famous people.

I'm still not sure what is special about the provenance of this 102? Most colonial machines were manufactured in their respective subcontinents and later in life imported into the UK or elsewhere by previous owners. That in itself is not unusual or special about this machine. Unless you know something which isn't being declared by the seller?

It is genuine. It has a number of obvious defects which have been noted. It is rare and will fetch a lot of money, even in its current condition. What more is there to say really?

Well, the auction still has 4 days to go. I suspect there may be more discussion after it has ended... or maybe not. If I knew a lot about it, (which as stated previously, I do not), and if I were keen on bidding, I would probably keep quiet until the auction ended. ;)

You're quite right. It's better to keep quiet if you're bidding! I have bid and won a few interesting pieces of late, some of which have been mentioned in this forum but often there is little to no interest and the discussion dies out before the auction ends and never returns. I've kept my acquisitions quiet as a result, if not many people are that interested so it's a bit of a double edged sword really.
