A lot of great advice has already been given, but since you say you are a rookie, one important piece of caution: DO NOT carry the phonograph at its lid handle, even if it looks tempting. The clips that hole the lid to the phonograph can easily open or the handle rip out, sending the machine crashing to the floor. Carry it in a sturdy bag or box instead to avoid damage.
And yes, I would also take the reproducer out and wrap it separately.

Adding to the message above, it's fine to use the handle, BUT NOT TO LIFT THE PHONOGRAPH, only to steady it as you support its weight from underneath.

Re: Winding / Cranking Edison Standard B Wax Cylinder Phonograph
I rarely have anything to say on technical issues, but do try to read and learn about phonograph stuff on this forum. However, this time I think it's imperative for me to jump in here. "Take the spring out of the barrel", "Take apart the motor".......are you guys kidding? Telling a complete novice to do that is not only irresponsible, it's DANGEROUS! It's like telling somebody who wants to learn how to put on a BandAid to next perform an appendectomy.
