Rubber gasket for Sound Box for my QRS Phonograph

I will admit, I am having some doubts about this machine?

Why?

You have been given some very good suggestions, on the sound box & tone arm insulator material replacement. On a QRS portable phonograph that hasn’t been manufactured in nearly a hundred years.

Yet you persist in complaining about all of these suggestions? And there have been some some real good ones. Also offers of help too.

This has become the proverbial “making mountain out of a molehill” situation.

It really shouldn’t be this hard to figure out a possible solution.

When the rubber sheets cost $5.84 cents, just for me to use what maybe a ⅓ of that, and then what? Throw the rest away, that’s pretty wasteful, and when would I need to use cork?

Paul, is there any way you could give me a precise measurement of the inner diameter of the soundbox and the outer diameter of the arm where it slips on? Also how wide it needs to be. I have some old VW dual- port manifold boots in brick red color I might be able to make a piece from.

Inner diameter of the sound box is 1 ¾ inches, the outer diameter of the tone arm is 1 ⅝ in.

The point is what would I do with the left over rubber, that I don’t use? It has nothing to do with spending money, it’s not wanting to waste material!

The red rubber sheets are of two thicknesses, 1/16" and 3/32".

If either are useful, tell me the thickness and approximate size of strip you would need, and I will cut and mail two slightly over-sized strips to you, that is if the modified VW parts don't work out.

I have lots left over. The whole package is 6" x 6" x ½" and fits easily in a small box of gramophone parts, supplies, and tools.

The cork, by the way, solved a problem with a needle cup and a poorly fitting sprung lid that allowed needles to spill out.

This has nothing to do with being wasteful. All of us, with the exception of Edisonfan here, keep a quantity of leftover supplies in our arsenal of phonograph fixings. Even Thomas Edison kept large supplies of miscellaneous junk around for inventive purposes at his Orange Grove laboratory & factory sight. I’m surprised with the online name of Edisonfan, OP here wouldn’t be more receptive to any of these suggestions.

Troll??!!! Wow ! That’s hurtful! I sir have been a member of this forum since 2009! Unlike you, I don’t keep an extra supply of material around, because I am not always fixing photographs all the time. Also, you might want to check my Profile as a troll would Not post as many times on here as I have! I have quite a few friends on here as well!

He's simply a bit dubious, as many of us are from time to time. Let's not get nervous and harsh... This is not an impossible problem, and eventually we'll find a suitable solution for his QRS tonearm to work properly. Let's be patient...

In such cases I keep an open eye during my walks in the streets, peeping at waste containers, etc, for eventually I find a piece of waste construction material, etc, that can be picked up and adapted for a new use. Specially in the waste containers around a new building under construction, overhauling, etc. Many pieces of usable materials can be found which otherwise you can't buy except in large quantities. Also watch things like rubber joints for plumbing, or any other uses, that can be bought at the brick-marts, and simply cut away or adapt for other gramophonic uses...
