Unknows HMV - 4047E

Post by Andrew Reed »

Hello,

I am French and recently bought a gramophone from an lady (around 60 years old) who inherited it from her grandmother. The model is an HMV 4047E, with the serial number 12892. It’s a portable suitcase-style gramophone, with reinforced sides, covered in black leather and oiled wood. The platter is red, which seems unusual.

The soundbox doesn't resemble any of the typical HMV and she is unbred. However, the sound it produces is clean and clear, which suggests it’s in good working condition despite its age. I believe the machine is around 94 years old and has held up remarkably well, showing great durability.

You can't disable the auto-stop (but you could unscrew it), and i don't found any kind of support for 78 RPM Inside the high part

I complely Restore It, or the must i can do about. the leather is shiny the metal part lost a lot of there rust and motor fully grease. Under the motor was a old newpaper maybe for humidity.

Calc ;
0.118*9.81 = 1.15758 N (newtone)
1,15758 / 0,0000007 = 1 653 685,71 Pa for M2, 1,15758 / 0,7= 1,65 Pa per Mn
1.65Pa for the Pressure on maid by the Needle and the Soundbox
******************

On the photos, I didn't touch anything from the bought state;

I’m looking for any additional information about this model, particularly regarding the soundbox, the year of production, and any insights about the red platter. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

It does not have its original soundbox. It should have an EMI Columbia derivative soundbox (also used on many 1930's period Pathé portables) with the embossed "dog and gramophone" in the centre of the fascia. I can't recall which number Columbia soundbox it is based on off hand but it is fairly commonly available. The red platter is correct. Obviously it is a French model 404 and not based on anything produced in the UK market at the time. It is closer to certain Pathé models - the case hardware and winding handle arrangement specifically - which is not surprising considering Pathé was also part of the EMI group monolith at the time.

Thanks, but I can't access my gramophone for now. By the weekend, I should be able to.

By the way, the automatic stop cannot be disabled, and the serial said 12 892

sorry about that. a forum made with PHP about gramophone couldn't have only 20yo users
