Interesting legal issue here I think, though not sure how the system functions in the UK
We have the person who consigned the item, who is probably ignorant of the issue. They are a victim without even knowing it?
Does Cuttlestones Auction have a duty to inform the seller that the reproducer worth - lets say £1000 has disappeared while under their care, and must the seller be compensated?
Even more interesting, the lack of reproducer impacts the selling price, thus if the machine complete would have brought say £8000, but in its current state only brings £2000, how would the seller be compensated the extra £6000 loss incurred because of the auctioneers lack of care, or do sellers sign some kind of waiver at consignment.
Must Cuttlestones report such a theft to the Police?

thanks
Why don't you ask them what their crime policy is or perhaps report the theft to the police?

The Expert sold for £1200 plus approx 30% buyers premium.
The Trademark sold for £1000 plus buyers premium.
I think both were reasonable. The Expert no doubt affected by its missing soundbox.
More than reasonable, I'd think. That is certainly the cheapest Expert I've seen in over 30 years. I paid the same 20 years ago for a saggy horn version in a new cabinet.

Steve I did hope you might be the winning bidder on the Expert.
I bid on the Trademark but I’ve already got 2 so my bids were low. The sale is certainly less than I paid for my oak machine. Despite the rather poor pictures I received from the auctioneer this machine looked quite original.

Are you saying you thought the trademark was ALL original? The soundbox was certainly repro and the elbow at least. I personally thought the horn was suspect too but not being there it's not easy to say definitively.
