Edison Cygnet Horn

Post by phonogfp »

“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”

April 8, 1913: Peter Weber was granted U.S. Design Patent No.1,058,284 on “Phonograph.” This was offered from 1909 (in slightly refined form) as the Edison Cygnet horn.

I know I'm being lazy in asking this, versus researching it, but I'll ask anyway, did Edison refer these horns as "Cygnet" horns, or is that part of collector vernacular?

They were called "Cygnet Horns" in Edison catalogs and throughout period Edison literature. You can't go wrong with this label!

I find it interesting that the design patent is different from what was actually produced.

Just to clarify, this is a Utility Patent rather than a Design Patent. It was (is?) common to have the production item differ slightly from the Utility Patent drawings. Here are just a few examples:

Thank you for clarifying the difference. I still think the end product is more attractive.

I'm with you, Dave! The patent drawings depict a rather awkward looking horn. The production Cygnet has a certain elegance.
