Petmecky Needles????

Post by Phono-Phan »

I saw this in an old catalog for Victor dealers. Has anyone ever heard of a Petmecky needle? What do they look like?

Here's a pack I have.

For a while (it would take some research to determine when) they were highly favoured in The Gramophone editorials.

I like the sales pitch "old and scratchy records are made as smooth and musical as new ones". It's the miracle needle!

The images posted so far are of American made packets. Here is my tin showing "J.E.D.&S. LTD, LONDON."
On the edge of the lid "MADE IN ENGLAND" is clearly printed.

I think the packet I posted is British, although it states "United States patent allowed" and "All foreign patents allowed."

The Name sounds middle European Pet-mets-ki , these guys were listed as being a London brand from the Gramophone magazine under "The Murdoch trading Company, Inc Clerkenwell Road & could afford full page Ad's in the magazine during the mid 1920's.
The company also produced & or retailed an add-on electro-magnetic pickup sometime in the late 1920's or early 1930's that has a front cover fixing screw that passes directly through a hole made in the horseshoe form magnet which is pretty unusual. I'm guessing, like a lot of these things, a design was created with the space for a Logo to be filled with orders from various brands wanting to use it. The RADIOGRAM pickup is another good example of this type of pickup also being produced with the Songster logo on the round badged front face as well as an example that is completely devoid of a logo of any kind.
