News? I don't know, but it was to me, until I watched a YT video from "Victrola Collector". I believe the iPhone has to be newer than the iPhone 14, but not certain of that. As an FYI, I have a Samsung Galaxy S22.
I was playing around with the app, and tried it on my VV-VI and my VV-XIV. Here are the results after my first try. I hope you find this interesting.

What’s the name of the app, and is it the same for both platforms?

There are a couple. I got the Android app, "RPM SPEED AND WOW". There are others and they may be better - I only tried this one. As for the iPhone, I don't know if this particular app will work on Apple's OS, I understand that's an apples and oranges thing with Android, but I know from the YT video by Victrola Collector, he used an iPhone.PeterF wrote: Fri Aug 22, 2025 2:34 pm What’s the name of the app, and is it the same for both platforms?

Re: iPhone and Android gyroscope app for turntable RPM
Thanks for posting this topic. I had forgotten about these apps.
The apps have existed for a couple of years at least. I once tried one on my old Motorola Moto e5 Play, but the phone had no Accelerometer/velocity sensor so the app wouldn't work.
So I ended up (eventually) buying a cheap digital tachometer, which is functional but less glitzy and somewhat less informative than the newer apps, it seems.
I looked up the features of my new phone, a Moto G Play 2024, something very cheap, and it has an Accelerometer listed in its sensors, so any of these apps for Android should now work for me. I will have to revisit them.

Here is an interesting video demonstration which compares one app to digital tachometers.

In the context of the probable degree of wow and flutter on the turntable being used, everything demonstrated seems to fall within a scope of functional, if not absolute, accuracy.
