HI all!
Wayne Holznagel asked me to repair his Victor III and I have discovered that his bull gear is severely worn. It is so bad that I don't feel comfortable just flipping the gear over. Can anyone help Wayne?
You can see that over half of the gear tooth is worn away. I could flip it over, but with that much wear, it does not seem like a good idea. What do you guys think?
Thanks!
Dave D

Hi, what is a bull gear? Perhaps a picture could enliven the search?

A "bull" gear is a larger gear that drives a smaller one, while a pinion gear is a small gear that drives a larger one. Don't ask me why...Sidewinder wrote: Sat Jan 31, 2026 6:15 am Hi, what is a bull gear? Perhaps a picture could enliven the search?

Dave,
You're correct, that gear is toast. I have to wonder about the condition of the worm. Are the sprirals still shiny & smooth, or are they scored and rough? Examination with a magnifying glass is sometimes needed to see the condition. A worn worm will drag down a motor and cause uneven speed.

I figured that I had nothing to lose, so I flipped the gear and installed it with some rivets I made on the lathe.

Amazing job. It looks like it is running smooth.
