Is the misconception about which side of the record the needle goes on really that widespread, or is it just that the few who have it wrong keep making videos?

Maybe he's trying to dig deeper into those grooves, to get more sound out?

Maybe they learned everything they know about phonographs from "educational" TV...watch the first five seconds (animated portion) of the opening titles to "The Electric Company":

I just picked up an Edison DD machine today from Craigslist, complete with about 40 records. It was disappointing to find the records were ordinary 78's, and I suspect they've been played with that machine. So, what's worse, playing a DD record on a Victrola, or a Victor record on a DD machine?

I would imagine that playing a DD on a Victrola would cause much more damage than playing a lateral cut record on a DD or Pathé machine.
